Seculier en Gelovig

‘Een imposant boek’, zo beschrijft NRC het lijvige werk van de Canadese filosoof Charles Taylor met de titel ‘A Secular Age’. Graag zetten wij dit boek op de agenda van onze najaarsconferentie op 5 oktober aanstaande. Hiermee willen we tegemoet komen aan predikanten en kerkelijk werkers die wegens tijdgebrek aan het lezen van dit nieuwe standaardwerk niet toekomen. Na deze dag hopen we dat iedereen de smaak te pakken heeft en alsnog de tijd gaat nemen voor dit boek met haar grondige analyse van onze tijd.

‘A Secular Age’ is een omvangrijke, complexe filosofische studie over geloof in een tijd waarin religie niet meer vanzelf spreekt. De gedachte dat religie uit zou sterven blijkt echter ook niet op te gaan. Taylor is er op uit om de huidige tijd te begrijpen. Dat doet hij door nauwgezet het proces van ‘onttovering’ van de wereld te beschrijven. Een eenvoudige vraag als ‘hoe kan het dat het voor een mens in 1500 onmogelijk was om niet te geloven, terwijl de gelovige tegenwoordig zich in een seculiere wereld bevindt?’ wordt een leidende vraag bij de methode die Taylor hanteert. Hij zet zich er voor in om het verleden vanuit de eigen context te verklaren in plaats van het te verklaren vanuit denkbeelden uit latere tijden. Op deze manier slaagt hij erin op een overtuigende manier de veranderingen in denken stapsgewijs op een rij te zetten. Het leidt ertoe dat we beter inzicht krijgen in onze eigen tijd: hoe het gekomen is waar we zijn en wat ertoe bijgedragen heeft dat we – uitzonderingen daargelaten – allemaal kunnen zeggen dat we seculier zijn en er aan toe kunnen voegen: en gelovig.

We hebben twee lectoren bereid gevonden om het boek van Taylor te presenteren. Dr. Govert Buijs - universitair docent sociale en politieke filosofie aan de VU - zal in de ochtendlezing Taylor’s analyse van onze tijd uiteenzetten. Dr. Theo Hettema – docent aan het Seminarium Bond Vrije Evangelische Gemeenten/verbonden aan de PThU - zal in de middaglezing de link leggen vanuit die analyse naar de werkers in de kerk (predikanten en kerkelijk werkers). Wat betekent seculier en gelovig zijn voor het werk in de gemeente?

We organiseren een pittig programma, zodat u met een voldaan gevoel naar huis keert en uitgedaagd wordt voor verdere reflectie. Seculier & gelovig, het raakt ons allemaal.
